The violent encounter broke out around 2:29 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, in a bustling commercial district on Blue Lakes Boulevard North. The fast-food location had opened just nine days earlier, drawing steady crowds of local families and weekend diners.
Chaos erupted as 24-year-old Chad Williams, armed with an AR-style rifle, began shooting inside the restaurant before moving out into the drive-thru lane and parking lot.
Panic in the Drive-Thru
Witnesses described immediate terror as gunshots echoed across the crowded property. Customers inside rushed for exits while workers fled toward surrounding businesses.
Social media video captured from nearby vehicles showed the gunman moving between parked cars and firing directly into windows.
As panic spread, bystanders took extraordinary steps to protect one another. Witness Lane Koehn recorded portion of the scene from his car while stopped nearby. He recalled seeing an In-N-Out employee heroically drag a female coworker who had been shot in the chest across the pavement to safety.
Koehn, along with other bystanders, rushed to render medical aid to the wounded worker while waiting for emergency crews to arrive.
Bystanders Action Stops Further Loss
The situation escalated quickly as the gunman continued firing across the lot. However, the attack was cut short when two armed individuals on scene chose to act.
Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed that an off-duty police officer and an armed civilian pulled out handguns and returned fire at Williams. Authorities believe their rapid response forced the suspect to retreat across the parking lot, preventing further casualties.
“First responders faced what was described as one of the most chaotic instances a law enforcement officer can face,” Chief Hicks told reporters. “We believe their actions drove the suspect from the scene.”
Williams was located shortly after in a nearby area, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have confirmed he acted entirely alone.
Communities Mourn Deceased Worker
The tragedy has devastated the local community and the popular burger chain. Among the three deceased victims was a young female In-N-Out employee who was working her shift when the shooting began.
In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder released an emotional statement acknowledging the heartbreaking loss of her employee.
“We lost one of our beautiful associates tonight,” Snyder stated. “She was taking care of our most important asset — our customers — and her life was taken by a disgusting human who doesn’t value the lives of others or his own.”
Seven other victims were transported to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center. Officials confirmed two patients were treated and released, three remain in stable condition, and two stay in critical condition.
